For the first time since the founding of the IAU in 1919, a Symposium is devoted to the exploration of the many relationships that Astronomy has established with the different cultures across our planet. The 4.5 days of scientific sessions will be evenly divided into three main programs, dealing with cultural aspects, astronomy in society, and educational issues. They should help to bridge the gap not only within the astronomical community at large (astronomers, amateurs, planetaria, teachers) but also, and more importantly, with our societies. The programs consist of invited reviews, contributed talks and posters. The conference talks will be published by Cambridge University Press in the IAU Symposia Series. An art exhibition featuring works from artists inspired by astronomical phenomena is also organised within the activities of the Symposium, with a forum for discussions on these topics with the artists present. The conference is now open for registration. For submitting contributions, and further details on the conference, please visit the website : http://iaus260.obspm.fr We look forward to seeing you in Paris next January ! This is why we extend to you this to participate at this gathering. This gathering, hold in conjunction with the World Space Week celebrations, is held under the hospice of His Excellency the Governor of Constantine and will take place from 30th October till the 1st November 2008. It brings together astronomers from around the country, in addition to astronomy associations from all over Algeria and from abroad. In particular, we expect the participation of the AUASS , the SAF (Soci?t? Astronomique de France), Association Jeunes-Science from Tunis, from Greece, Lebanon, Kuwait, Iran, and others which will confirm soon. The ASAL (L'Agence Spatiale Algerienne) is a partner in the gathering and has been participating in it ever since its inception in 2002.In addition to the Salon held in the exposition hall of the Palais de la Culture Malek Haddad, there will be a series of public lectures and specialized workshops. This year's theme of the has been chosen for World Space Week 2009 is : Exploring the Universe. As a subtheme, the National Fair organizing committee has chosen to take the opening up of the field of extrasolar astronomy as this year's theme. It will deal with this new vista in Astronomy which will no doubt led us to a new understanding of planetary systems and will at term help us better understand our own solar environment and its origin. We expect each guest association to participate to the Fair by setting up a stand displaying their local/national astronomy activities (pictures, scale models, artifacts, realizations, ?). A short talk could be given about a specific astronomy topic or about astronomy in their country. Concerning the local accommodations at Constantine, it is completely at our charge. They are now available for download at https://titanas.it.teithe.gr/shared/v13/astronomy/ They are approximately 35-45MB per 50 minute lecture, and as of today, 11 lectures are available. Maciej Soltynski ---- Original Message ----- Subject: [AstroNet] Free Introductory Astronomy Course Prof Robert Nemiroff (Michigan Tech) is teaching an astronomy course available freely online He writes: The course originates at Michigan Technological University where I am a Professor. Many MTU students are taking this exact class for credit, but anyone with a browser can take it for free. Not only are the lectures free, but this semester no textbook is needed for the course since I am exclusively using the web: mostly APOD (Astronomy Picture of the Day http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html) and Wikipedia. The idea of teaching without a formal textbook is to make the course as inexpensive to students and un-registered web-viewers as possible. APOD is used because I am so familiar with it, and because the liberal use of APOD images makes the course really beautiful, in my (biased) opinion. The lectures occur live at Michigan Tech on Mondays and Wednesdays, and are released to iTunes and learnoutloud.com shortly after. Every Wednesday, at the end of class, I can be seen reviewing the previous week's APODs. Polite criticisms and general feedback are welcome! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It is thus still realistic to put something together by the deadline. Cheers Lisa It is coming soon! The Great World Wide Star Count is starting on October 20th and running through November 3rd , 2008. This Windows to the Universe program is an international citizen-science event that encourages everyone, astronomers and non-astronomers alike, to measure their local light pollution and report their observations online. The Great World Wide Star Count, now a part of the Dark Skies Awareness cornerstone project for the upcoming International Year of Astronomy, is designed to raise awareness about light pollution as well as encourage learning in astronomy. No prior experience is necessary--all information needed to participate is on the Star Count Web site (www.windows.ucar.edu/starcount), along with a downloadable activity guide (www.windows.ucar.edu/citizen_science/starcount/downloads.html) available in eight languages. All observations will be available online via Google Earth and as downloadable datasets. In 2007, people from 64 countries contributed more than 6,600 observations to the inaugural Star Count. In order to build momentum in for IYA in 2009, we are hoping to double our participation this year and need your help! Please help us spread the word to your members, families, friends, and especially any teachers that you may know. Our downloads page (www.windows.ucar.edu/citizen_science/starcount/downloads.html) also contains a half-page flyer that may be freely printed and distributed. Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2008 11:22:46 +0000 From: johanneskepler at att.net To: kg at saao.ac.za (Kevin Govender) Dear Mr. Govender, The Johannes Kepler Project and The Chromatics are happy to announce the release of the AstroCappella song "Shoulders of Giants". This song was commissioned by the Johannes Kepler Project, written and arranged by Padi Boyd and performed by The Chromatics, specifically for the International Year of Astronomy. You may recall that an earlier version of the song debuted at the AAS/ASP meeting in St. Louis, MO, last summer. "Shoulders of Giants" will be used as part of the Johannes Kepler Project's 2009 Astronomy Music Video Contest. In addition, The Chromatics and I hope the song will strike a harmonious cord with people and be used in a variety of other IYA projects around the globe. To this end, The Chromatics and I would like to make this song freely available for such use, asking only that the appropriate credits be given to the composer (Padi Boyd), the performers (The Chromatics/AstroCappella) and the Johannes Kepler Project. (Please note, however, that the use of the song as part of a commercial project will require a copyright release from the Project.) The song and lyrics can be downloaded from The Chromatics' AstroCappella website: http://www.astrocappella.com/IYA . Information about the Johannes Kepler Project and the music video contest are on my website: www.johanneskepler.org . Please feel free to share the song with other astronomy enthusiasts! We hope it inspires everyone to go outside, look up and experience the wonders of the the universe! Enjoy "Shoulders of Giants" and thank you for sharing the song with your friends and colleagues. (See the email below from the director of the SAAO to the staff). This has not been officially released to the media just yet but serves as a call for assistance and volunteers from the AstroNet community. There will be activities in Sutherland for the week between Christmas and New Year culminating in a once-in-a-lifetime all night stargazing session at the SAAO observatory in Sutherland (yes, right up there on the plateau where SALT and the other telescopes are!). Within a few weeks we will have press releases and times when people can start booking places for this unique opportunity to experience the world famous skies of Sutherland from the telescope plateau itself. What we need now are volunteers and organising assistance to handle all the logistics. Please write to me if you are keen and I will send you more detail. Let's make the most of this truly unique opportunity to celebrate the start of a year that will surely remain with us forever! Regards Kevin -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [SAAO Staff] New Years Star Party at Sutherland Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2008 17:55:38 +0200 From: Phil Charles Proposed New Year's Star Party at Sutherland As I reported at my feedback yesterday, and after consideration by the SAAO Executive of the risks that would be involved, we have decided to go ahead and dedicate the use of the observatory on the night of 31st December 2008 to a public event in Sutherland. This is in recognition of the significance of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and the importance of encouraging and enhancing the public's participation in astronomy. A large number of people (limited by our hosting capacity) will be allowed to spend the entire night at the telescopes (including SALT) in Sutherland, an area which is otherwise strictly reserved for research purposes. This unique event will be the first time in the history of the SAAO in Sutherland that an entire night will have been set aside for the public. It will mark a significant occasion in celebrating astronomy as we see in the International Year of Astronomy 2009. I would like to welcome all SAAO staff and astronomy enthusiasts across the country to support this initiative either by attending the event themselves or serving as a volunteer. More information will follow shortly but you may contact Kevin Govender (kg at saao.ac.za) in the meantime should you want to participate or contribute in some way. It's now time to start implementing! This is an open call to the astronomy community to put your many ideas down into simple "one page proposals" (and I do mean SIMPLE) so that we can try to get you the resources and collaborations to make your activities happen in 2009! For those who would rather simply adopt an activity that needs doing there is also the "to-do" list on the IYA website (http://www.astronomy2009.org.za/projects/full-list/) that you are welcome to contribute to. Please note that this call for a "proposal" is independent of calls we may later receive from the SA government or SAASTA - this is simply an effort in co-ordinating the activities we hope to make happen in 2009. There isn't an immediate slush fund available for these simple "one page proposals" - but we hope to be able to raise funds and resources for them. Please note that all your proposals will be placed onto the IYA website (i.e. it will be public) which will be to your benefit as more opportunities for funding come up from various sources all around the world - such as the recent EAS one. Making these proposals public will also help our small community to share ideas and interact with each other on various projects. Some of your proposals may not need funding or may already be funded but will be important in co-ordinating the activities so as to maximise the support and benefits (e.g. if you have a project for a star party then we may provide you with telescopes or handouts etc that may enhance the activity). I encourage every individual or organisation who has any plans for IYA2009 to send in your simple one pager(s) (send to info at astronomy2009.org.za) so that we can create a database and thus support and enhance your activities, either with funds, resources, volunteers or collaborations. The sooner you get them in the better - it shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to brainstorm with your colleagues and then send us a description. We'll follow up with you for more details should we need them. Please send in your one page proposal(s) containing the following: 1. Title (just a name for your project - for our reference) 2. Name of implementing organisation or individual 3. Contact details (especially cellphone numbers and email addresses) 4. Brief description of activity (just a paragraph or two of what the project entails and how it will work) 5. Estimated funds required (no need for great detail - just a rough estimate and breakdown of costs needed to make it happen) 6. Date and venue of implementation (when and where would you like it to take place) NOTE: The idea is to give us a sense of the project and we will then contact you should we need more information. It's fine if it's a little over a page but please try to keep it concise. You may send it in the text of an email or in any commonly readable document format (doc, pdf, txt, etc). Send all proposals to info at astronomy2009.org.za. You may send in as many proposals as you wish. Looking forward to helping make your projects happen. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! Message-ID: <48FDE4E5.5060909@saao.ac.za> Hi there, This is a link to the FAQ page of the sci.astro newsgroup: http://sciastro.astronomy.net/ It has some very useful Q&As (including stuff I've wondered about!) grouped into astronomy subtopics. The only problem is that the answer pages themselves are in a horrible text format, obviously cut and pasted from emails, so the link may be a very useful resource for us to communicate but not something to put on the IYA webpage? I suggest a box of smarties to the person who can translate the pages into a more attractive format! Cheers! Mell -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... This one is definitely worth watching - and it's our last decent national eclipse at a reasonable time of day until 2016. We think getting the whole country to spend a couple of minutes watching the eclipse would be a good second-event for the International Year of Astronomy (after SALT's Sutherland New Year star-party, of course!). We have put an eclipse info page onto our website: www.planetarium.co.za Included on this website is: * info about times and visibilities for South Africa and neighbours * quite a bit about "Eclipse pinhole projection art" - this looks like a very good way to keep kids busy when they're out watching the eclipse (we need to stop them from staring at the Sun and fighting over eclipse viewers) * instructions (and worksheet) for a scale model of the eclipse - use a fizzpop (Moon) and a tennis ball (Earth) - hold them 2m apart, and try to get the shadow of the fizzpop on the tennis ball * order form for eclipse viewers. Eclipse viewer ordering info, and eclipse visibility around the country, are also available on a cellphone-friendly web-page. This is at planetarium.co.za/cell This is an extremely simple website that should work on any phone - it works on mine! It is intended for use by people who need to order viewers, but cannot easily get at the internet - e.g. teachers. Eclipse Viewers These are the cardboard viewers, similar to red/blue 3d viewers but with solar filter material in the eye-holes. Pics on the website. They are more-or-less essential for eclipse-viewing - pinhole projection is great, but you cannot stop people from looking directly at the Sun, which causes eye-damage. Using eclipse-viewers also re-inforces the message that looking at the Sun is dangerous. Eclipse viewers need to be manufactured weeks ahead of the eclipse, and we have to deal with the December national shut-down. No-one else seems to be making viewers, and at the moment it doesn't seem likely that a sponsor will be found to pay for free viewers inserted in newspapers. So: we at the Jhb Planetarium have set up an eclipse viewer manufacturing line, using local printers and labour. We need your help (and everyone else's!) to publicise the eclipse now, and order viewers. We cannot afford to make any sort of useful quantity unless we get large numbers of pre-paid orders. Our prices are: * R10 each * R8 for 10+ * R6 special for schools only Add postage to the above. If any science centre-types want to buy for re-sale, speak to me, but this is rock-bottom pricing, and it also needs the US$ to stay below R10 (the filter material is imported). Please place orders for viewers before 3 November. Orders must be accompanied by payment - we do not have money to pay for the production. If anyone needs anything else from us to help us publicise the eclipse and the availability of viewers, please let me know. I'm hoping most of what you need is on the website. Congratulations, FETTU!
We are happy to report some more excellent news, courtesy of the FETTU team.
NASA has approved an Education and Public Outreach proposal, resulting in approximately $300,000 (US) for use in 2009 and 2010. This money will fund two semi-permanent FETTU exhibits in Chicago (in conjunction with the Adler Planetarium) and Atlanta (with Agnes Scott College and the Hartsfield International Airport), as well as a travelling version that will have multiple stops across the US. The NASA grant will also provide FETTU organisers with the ability to create informal education products, materials for visually impaired users, and evaluation information. These and other elements that are enabled by the NASA grant will be shared with FETTU organisers worldwide.

FETTU on a roll!
Three’s a charm for FETTU: Sky & Telescope magazine will feature about 50 FETTU images across 30 pages in its annual "Beautiful Universe" publication.

Those are the key updates for this time. We think they serve to demonstrate just how much progress is being made in this final leg before 2009.
Remember that the Secretariat is always willing to assist with any IYA2009 questions you may have!

Kind regards,
Pedro and Mariana
