[AstroNet] IYA meeting Monday 3rd Nov

Sorry, this is short notice, but Kevin Govender of the IYA group in Cape
Town will be in Jhb next Monday afternoon.  We're starting to get
requests for a "calendar" of IYA events for next year, so it would be
great to have a meeting to discuss where we're at with all this.  The
meeting would be open to anyone involved (or wanting to be involved) in
IYA2009 SA projects.

 

RSVP if you know you're coming, Kevin's offered to supply refreshments!


 

Date: Mon 3rd Nov 2008

Time: 2pm - 4pm

Venue: Jhb Planetarium, Yale Rd (off Empire Rd, on Wits University
campus)

 

Purpose of the meeting: Draw up a calendar of events for IYA2009

* Stuff that is already in progress:

   - specific events planned for the year

   - other activities that are not limited to a specific time-slot

 

* Potential projects:

  - specific events

  - other activities not limited to a specific time-slot

 

Kevin already has a list of events:

-   Sutherland IYA star party in Sutherland all night New Years eve to
see in IYA (31 Dec -1 Jan)

-   Global IYA launch at UNESCO, Paris (15 -16 Jan)

-   Astronomy in Society Conference following the launch in Paris (19 -
23 Jan)

-   Partial Solar Eclipse across SA and official SA IYA launch (26th
Jan)

-   Possible meeting of SA ICSU (5 - 6 Feb)

-   SKA meetings in SA (17 to 27 Feb)

-   African Science Communication Conference (18-21 Feb)

-   Cape Argus cycle tour (still planning associated activity e.g.
costumed riders, scaled route etc (8th March)

-   SciFest 2009 in Grahamstown (25 - 31 March)

-   Global "100 hours of Astronomy" cornerstone project (2 -5 April)

-   National Science Week 2009 - with IYA thrust (9 - 16 May)

-   Youth month/Day (activities to be confirmed) (16th June)

-   South African Institute of Physics Conference - IYA theme/presence
confirmed (6 - 10 July)

-   International Astronomical Union General Assembly in Rio, Brazil (3
- 14 August)
