Hi everyone,

Join the Soutpansberg Astronomy Club in Louis Trichardt for an evening of stargazing on Saturday 28th May from sunset onwards.

Watch the constellations Libra and Scorpius rise in the east, as Orion follows the Sun sinking below the horizon on the opposite side of the sky.

Looking southwards, the southern circumpolar stars are prominent with the “pointers” in the constellation Centaurus The Centaur, showing the way to the Southern Cross. In the same region the “diamond cross” as well as the “false cross” in the constellations, Carina The Keel and Vela The Sails can be seen. The famous Eta Carinae Nebula, one of the best examples of a diffuse nebula in the sky, appearing as a brighter patch to the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye.

Hydra, The Water Snake or Water Monster is the largest of the 88 constellation, and in Greek mythology was the multi-headed monster slain by Hercules as one of his 12 labours. The constellation will be visible early in the evening spanning over 100 degrees of sky from west to east. The planet Saturn with its ring system will be overhead at 8pm and is always a fantastic sight in any telescope regardless of aperture.
