[AstroNet] Take part in an experiment to measure the distance to the Moon - Sunday, August 18

Hi all,

Mr Tine Golez of Slovenia is asking for South African photographers to
take part in a cool international lunar parallax experiment.

In Ljubljana in Slovenia, twelve maths/physics teachers are holding a
conference, and during the meeting they would like to take part in the
experiment. Tine wants a photo of the Moon, taken on Sunday, August 18,
at 22:00 SAST. The photo should show the Moon (not overexposed) as well
as the background stars. He recommends using a lens with focal length
about 80-mm, exposure time of about 4 seconds, and the use of an easy
way to obscure the Moon so that it is not too bright on the final image.

Tine published an article in MNASSA recently about this method. It is a
brilliant demonstration of using parallax to measure the distance to the
Moon.

If you'd like to take part, please e-mail me and I'll forward the PDF
with details, or contact him directly [ tine.golez at guest.arnes.si ]

Best regards,
Auke
