INVITATION: PUBLIC TALK BY JOCELYN BELL BURNELL
Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, world-renowned radio astronomer from Oxford
University, will deliver a public talk as part of an SKA SA science
conference taking place during February 2014 in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Working on a pioneer radio telescope at Cambridge University as a graduate
student in the 1960s, Bell Burnell made the observations that led to the
discovery of the first four known pulsars. (Pulsars are spinning stars made
up of neutrons.)
During her career, spanning more than four decades, she was rewarded many
times for her outstanding professional contributions. Bell Burnell was
president of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2002 to 2004, and in 2008
she became the first women president of the Institute of Physics in the UK.
She is an avid supporter of women in science and public understanding of
science.
Her talk will be on "Pulses and Pulsars: an introduction to time domain
radio astronomy". She will describe exciting recent discoveries about
pulsars (pulsating radio stars) and other puzzling phenomena such as
short-duration pulses or bursts of radio waves which have been detected from
what seem to be distant parts of the universe.
The talk takes place on Wednesday 19 February 2014 (18:30 - 20:00) at the
STIAS conference centre, Stellenbosch. Map and directions at www.stias.ac.za

Entrance is free and members of the media and public are welcome to attend,
but places are limited. Please register by sending an email with your name
and mobile number to marina at ska.ac.za <mailto:marina at ska.ac.za> no later
than 10 February 2014. Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served
basis.
