astronomy or science communication and a passion for education and
public engagement? The University has the right job for you.

*Education & Public Outreach Officer (full time)*

Leiden Observatory, the astronomy department of Leiden University, is
involved in several important European and global educational
programmes in astronomy at the elementary and secondary school level.
These include *Universe Awareness* (www.unawe.org), *Teaching Enquiry
with Mysteries Incorporated* (www.teachingmysteries.eu) and the IAU
*astroEDU*(www.astroedu.iau.org). Funds are likely to be available to
initiate a new European *EU Space Awareness* programme early in 2015.
We seek an Education and Outreach Officer to support the
implementation of these projects.

The main duties and responsibilities will include:

   -

   Developing educational and outreach content for various media and
target groups;
   -

   Supporting the Project Manager in the development and
implementation of projects;
   -

   Monitoring the progress of the technical and scientific aspects of
the projects, including budgets and quality assurance;
   -

   Evaluating the projects performance estimators;
   -

   Representing the projects occasionally at national, European and
international conferences;
   -

   Developing collaborations and communication with partner
institutions, astronomical researchers, the space industry and
policy-makers.

Your profile


   -

   A Masters degree in astronomy, science communication or another
related study;
   -

   Experience with pre-tertiary education and/or communicating
astronomy with the public;
   -

   Knowledge of principles and models of public engagement with science;
   -

   Knowledgeable of digital technologies and open science frameworks;
   -

   Complete fluency in English and preferably an excellent knowledge
of additional languages;
   -

   Proven skills in written, visual and verbal communications;
   -

   Proven skills with project management;
   -

   Excellent computer skills (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint or similar).



What do we offer?

A fascinating job in a scientific environment of an internationally
renowned research institute. Appointment will be according to the
terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO
*Nederlandse Universiteiten*), for the initial duration of one year.
The salary will be set, depending on education and work experience,
between the gross minimum of EURO 2379,- and gross maximum of EURO 3755 per
month, based on full-time employment (salary scale: 10). In addition,
Leiden University offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an
end-of-year premium of 8.3%.
