Prof. Phil Charles will give a free public lecture on Saturday, August 13 at S.A. Astronomical
Observatory in Cape Town at 20h00. The title of his talk is "At last,

EN-ZA" lang="EN-US">While inaugurated in 2005, shortly after completion of its construction
phase, SALT then had to undergo testing and commissioning. This revealed
serious flaws which took time to analyse, understand and rectify. This arduous
journey is now coming to an end, as SALT is scheduled to begin “normal science
operations” on September 1. Phil will briefly highlight the results
obtained with SALT since its repair last year, showing how it is now
world-leading in its class. Also, how you really can build an outstanding
telescope of 10m aperture with only $20M! He will also present some
preliminary science results (on accreting compact objects in our Galaxy) that
