World Space Week in South Africa - 6 to 11 October 2003

World Space Week (WSW) is a global event, celebrated by about 50 countries during October every year. WSW will also be celebrated in South Africa with a variety of activities around the country, from 6 - 11 October 2003. These activities are organized jointly by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Department of Communications (DOC), with the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) as implementation agency. 

Events
  a.. A "Roadshow" (from 22 September to 3 October) taking space science and technology to schools in urban and rural areas across South Africa.

  b.. World Space Week Events: Space displays, popular talks, workshops on rockets, telescopes, electronics and comets, space shows and space film festivals will be held around the country. Several science centres, museums, planetaria, observatories, science councils and other organisations are joining forces to put on a week of fun and educational space activities.

  c.. The Southern Skies Challenge will invite youth (5 - 23 years) to write, draw or create other art in different categories about space sciences. Prizes in this competition include computers, cash prizes and visits to the new Southern African Large Telescope. The closing date for the competition is 15 December 2003. 

  d.. A map poster with information on "Who's who in the Southern Space Zoo" will be produced as an educational resource for schools, libraries and museums. The poster if available (free) from Tebogo Gule or call (012) 392 9374.
