Dear ASSA Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I inform you that on Sunday afternoon
Professor Anthony Patrick Fairall passed away in a tragic incident
while diving near Hout Bay.

Professor Fairall (65) was one of South Africa's leading
extragalactic astronomers and a highly acclaimed educator and astronomy
populariser. He will be sorely missed by the astronomical fraternity in
South Africa. Professor Fairall was highly active in the Astronomical
Society of Southern Africa for many years and served as the President
of ASSA in the 1983-1984 year.

We join with the rest of the astronomical fraternity in expressing
our deepest condolences to the Fairall family and to his friends and
colleagues.
