*ASSISTANT CO-ORDINATOR FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ASTRONOMY*

*INTRODUCTION:*

The South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) is the national centre 
for optical and infrared astronomy in South Africa. It is a facility of 
the National Research Foundation (NRF) under the Department of Science 
and Technology (DST). Its core function is to conduct fundamental 
research in astronomy and astrophysics by providing a world-class 
facility and by promoting astronomy and astrophysics in Southern Africa. 
SAAO headquarters are in the suburb of Observatory in Cape Town. The 
main telescopes used for research are located at the SAAO observing 
station near Sutherland in the Northern Cape, a four hour drive from 
Cape Town.

SAAO, in partnership with the International Astronomical Union and 
IYA2009 secretariat, invites applications for the above position, which 
will be a one year contract position:


*DUTIES:*

·        Conduct survey of state of Astronomy in Developing Countries

·        Encourage and support the development of regional networks

·        Fundraising

·        Assist with the co-ordination of the activities of the Division

*SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:*

Post graduate in Astronomy or related field with proven experience 
working in an academic environment

Written and verbal communication skills and preferably with other common 
languages

High degree of proficiency in computer usage

High level of organizational ability is required

Highly developed interpersonal skills
