Hi there,

Next Saturday, November 26 at 20h00, S.A. Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town will have a free public lecture by Dr. Enrico Olivier. Title of the lecture is "Beetlejuice: Should we be afraid?" After the talk, there will be stargazing, tours of the library, McClean museum and telescope

Abstract:
It has been purported that in 2012 the red supergiant star Betelgeuse will become a supernova. It is also claimed that the resulting supernova will rival the full moon and even the sun in apparent brightness. The talk will focus on supernovae in general, the danger these most energetic cosmic events hold for the Earth and if the claims regarding Betelgeuse have any truth in them.

Bio:
Dr. Enrico A. Olivier was an Outreach Astronomer at the S.A. Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) 2009 - 2011. He has since left this position for a lecturer position at the University of Western Cape. His research interest falls in the areas of observational cosmology and the theory of stellar vibrations. He is a University of the Western Cape (UWC) alumni, where he studied B.Sc, Honours and M.Sc degrees. He completed his Ph.D in 2004 at the Australian National University, while doing his doctorate research at the well known Mount Stromlo and Siding Springs Observatories. After completing his Ph.D degree, he returned to South Africa, where he held Post-Doctoral positions at the SAAO and UWC.
