INVITE YOU TO AN OPEN EVENING

 

on astronomical history and sky viewing at the 

Johannesburg Observatory on 25 August 2012

 

Programme:

·       Tour of the Observatory site and library

·       Professor Francis Thackeray FRSSAf, Wits University, will give a talk on The Radcliffe Observatory in Oxford and South Africa with particular reference to David Thackeray

·       Constant Volschenk, Astronomical Society of South Africa, will present a DVD The ancient astronomers of Timbuktu

·       After a presentation from Constant Volschenk about what may be visible in the night sky, there will be viewing through the 26 inch Innes Telescope and/or the telescopes of ASSA

Venue: Johannesburg Observatory, 18 Gill Street, Observatory. (Directions: see below)

  b.. PLEASE BRING BINOCULARS 
  c.. STAR CHARTS WILL BE PROVIDED 
YOU ARE WELCOME TO BRING A PICNIC BASKET AND ENJOY THE VIEW OVER JOHANNESBURG IN THE OBSERVATORY GARDENS BEFORE THE EVENT. BE SURE TO DRESS WARMLY!

>From the M1 South:

1.        Take the Riviera Road off-ramp 

2.        Turn left into Riviera Road 

3.        At the T-junction, turn right into West 

4.        Turn left into 1st 

5.        Turn right into Louis Botha 

6.        Turn left into Acorn 

7.        Turn left into St Peter 

8.        Turn right into Bezuidenhout 

9.        Turn left into Eckstein 

10.     Turn right into Innes (Sacred Heart College on your left) 

11.     Go through a boom gate 

12.     At the T-junction, turn right into Gill 

Turn left into the Observatory complex (sign reads Johannesburg Observatory)
