*BACKGROUND*



The NRF is mandated by an Act of Parliament, the National Research
Foundation Act (Act No. 23 of 1998) to: “Support and promote research
through funding, human capacity development and the provision of the
necessary research facilities, in order to facilitate the creation of
knowledge, innovation and development in all fields of science and
technology, including indigenous knowledge”.



In support of this mandate, the NRF makes funds available to support NRF
Freestanding (including DST priority research areas) Doctoral candidates
for the 2017 academic year. NRF Freestanding Doctoral bursaries are
released as block grants to South African public universities. In addition,
the block grant awards are made to universities to nominate qualifying
students in line with the ministerial guidelines on equity and redress to
the NRF (Ministerial Guidelines on Bursaries and Fellowships, 2013).



These funding instruments make funds available to support students pursuing
full-time Honours studies at South African public universities. In all
Scholarships, priority will be given to financially needy yet academically
capable applicants who were previously funded by the National Student
Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and/or University Financial Aid. This does not
exclude applicants who were not previously funded by NSFAS and/or
University Financial Aid from receiving postgraduate funding from the NRF.



*ELIGIBILITY*



Registered UNISA Honours students who meets the following criteria:

-

-          Applicants must be a full time registered UNISA student in 2017.

-          Scholarship is based on academic merit.

-          Applicants must have obtained an aggregate of at least 60% for
their previous degree.

-          Preference will be given to student that were previously funded
by NSFAS or University Financial Aid Scheme (Proof Must be attached)

-          Applicants must have an intention to continue with Masters
studies.

-          Applicants’ Research should be aligned with one of the national
research priorities areas.

-          Applicants who already hold a qualification at this level are
not eligible to apply. Bursaries are not awarded for parallel degrees i.e.
for a second degree at the same level of a degree already held by the
applicant

-          The bursary-holder may hold bursaries, awards assistantships and
receive emoluments from private institutions in conjunction with the NRF
Scholarship. The bursary may not be held concurrently with any other NRF or
government-funded scholarships.

-          Bursars are *NOT *allowed to be *employed on a full time
basis **(this
include interns, postgraduate student assistants or any other form of
employment where they are remunerated) **, *may only undertake a maximum of
12 hours per week of teaching, tutorials, assistance or demonstrating
duties.

-          In line with the South African equity targets, NRF Freestanding
bursaries will be approved according to the following set equity targets: 90%
blacks, 55% Women; and 4% students with disabilities.

-     In line with the South African equity targets, Innovation Block Grant
is awarded to South African citizens/ South African permanent residents and
13% to foreign nationals at 5% to SADC, 4% to the rest of Africa and 4% to
students outside Africa. In addition DST-NRF Innovation bursaries will be
approved according to the following set equity targets: 90% blacks, 55%
Women; and 4% students with disabilities.

*CONDITIONS OF THE AWARD *



-          Bursary-holders *should not hold full-time salaried employment*
during the tenure of the bursary.

-          The bursary may be supplemented by other sources to the
university’s maximum allowable value at Honours level.

-          The Bursary-holder may hold bursaries, awards assistantships and
receive emoluments from private institutions in conjunction with the NRF
Scholarship. The Bursary may not be held concurrently with any other NRF or
Government-funded scholarship/bursary.

-          Bursary-holders will be allowed to undertake a maximum of twelve
(12) hours of teaching, assistance or demonstrator duties per week, and may
be remunerated for services rendered, provided that he/she is reimbursed at
the normal university/university of technology tariff for services rendered.

-          Failure to comply with the aforementioned will entitle the NRF
to forthwith cancel the agreement, in which event the bursary-holder will
be liable to refund the scholarship plus interest at the prevailing prime
rate charged by the NRF bankers



*VALUE OF THE AWARD*



-        NRF Freestanding Bursary  – R 30 000

-     DST-NRF Innovation Bursary – R 60 000

-     NSFAS Bursary – R76 000



*APPLICATION PROCESS*



Complete the attached form and submit it to the UNISA Support Directorate *with
the required supporting documentation (see below list)* via e-mail (
researchgrants at unisa.ac.za) by 20 October 2017;



(1) 2017 Proof of registration on the University letterhead

(2) Certified copy of South African ID

(3) Full academic record on the University letterhead

(4) Proof that the student was previously funded by NSFAS or University
Financial Aid Scheme (only applicable to Students that were previously
funded by NSFAS)

(5) Affidavit from Police station (comfirming that you are NOT employed
during 2017 academic year (i.e you do not hold any fulltime salaried job).
